Cultural Healing
A mixed media painting reinterpreting Atwood’s idea of culture—traditionally signified by a healed femur—as it transforms through the unexpected care of ant colonies. By depicting a leg bone fracture mended by species like driver ants (once used as natural sutures), this work challenges the notion that culture is solely human, inviting viewers to recognize empathy and cultural expression within the broader natural world.
Coastal Cartographies
A scroll map of Puerto Rico’s coasts that overlays marine protected areas and state-designated natural zones with community-reported sites of environmental injustice from Amigxs del Mar’s Mapa de Costas. This project reveals how vulnerable communities and nature often suffer together—highlighting cases where coastal construction monopolizes natural landscapes for select interests, leading to environmental degradation and social displacement. An experimental foray into artist book mediums, it challenges viewers to rethink the intertwined fate of humanity and the natural world.
Black-Out
Exploring personal experiences with epilepsy and the color black as a symbol of elegance, fear, silence, mystery, and as a portal to deities of the night and the deep ocean. Presented as part of a broader thematic showcase on Blackness.
Plant Nations
An artist book that doubles as a plant documentation journal, "Plant Nations" catalogs flora under imaginative, fictitious nation categories. With each bound page, the project weaves botanical details into a narrative framework—beginning with the inaugural chapter, "Mosquito Killers"—offering a playful yet thoughtful exploration of nature.
Vejigante Codex
An experimental exploration of artist book forms that delves into the formation and cultural fusion of vejigantes. Using low-cost materials like air-dry clay, old newspaper, and ink, the project experiments with accordion and back-binding techniques to reimagine these iconic figures.
